This is a town I remember very well. A lot of things happened there. I suppose that's to be expected considering the ages I was while I lived there. 13-18 yrs old is a very tough time in the life of a kid. Abused and molested or not, it's just a tough time.
Considering I was more sexually advanced, thanks Cherie, than most of the kids my age you just know I slept with a lot of girls I went to school with and even 4 or 5 older women.
I got officially arrested for the first time, I got threatened with reform school in Eldora Iowa 3 or 4 times and had a few misadventures with the legal system.
The one thing that does surprise me about LeMars is how many of the people I knew there own large comapanies. I knew all the Wells kids and their parents owned Wells Blue Bunny.
My algebra teacher was Mrs. Harker and you see Harkers meat trucks all over the country now. When I lived there they were a small little locker that cut up meat for other people.
Schuster trucking was a small, local operation as was Harms trucking and another one from Akron, Iowa but the name escapes me now.
I also quit school after I finished 9th grade. Lol, I know, it shows in my writing. I always hated English class anyway so it's not surprising. Until I started writing on the net I never much cared because I could hire someone to do it for me.
I got my first car there.
I fell into what I thought was love, for the first time.
I got shot at for the first time but far from the last tme.
I got kicked out of school a few times.
I got put in jail for the first time.
I wrecked my first car.
I got my first real job.
I was reunited with my grandmother and grandfather in Minnesota.
I started hitch hiking around the country and hopping freight trains as a way of travel.
I was the person your mother always warned you to stay away from. Lol, mothers shoud really stop doing that because it just pushes the girls to go out with people like me to see what's so bad about me and to show their parents they can't be told what to do.
It was an interesting place but not one I'm ever interested in living in again. I was through there in April and was a bit amazed at how much it had grown but didn't care enough to actually drive through town and look at it. They now have a highway that bypasses the town so that's the one I took.
I know quite a few people from the area but I don't like any of them well enough to think about them very often. My first love I'll always remember and contrary to Cherie I sometimes wonder what happened to her. If she's happy and how shes doing.
I'll think of more but I'm not a person who goes out of his way to keep in touch with other people. With me it's pretty much out of sight, out of mind. There are a few exceptions to that but not many.
I've lived better places and I've lived worse places. Essentially it's just another in a long list of places where I lived for awhile, got tired of, and moved on to the next adventure. While I get stressed out frequently and depressed now and then I've always seen life as one big adventure, and, at times, waited with breathless anticipation for what was to happen next.
The one thing I know for sure, in my life, is that something will happen. Whether it's good or bad I never know but I do know something will happen that will make life interesting for a while. Sometimes to interesting.
There's an ancient Chinese curse. Quite simple really. "May you live in interesting times." I did and I still do. It took me a long time to understand why that was a curse tho. Lol, now I get it. Yeah, so, I'm a little slow now and then.
Calmness, peacefulness and serenity is a good thing. Interesting times are quite stressful, most of the time.

You are the architect of your own life. Make it what you want.
Here's a quote from George Bernard Shaw: "People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them."
When I was a kid I was severely abused. Physically, mentally and sexually. We were poorer than most people in town and 4 of us lived in a one br house with no running water. Those are the circumstances I was born into.
I didn't choose to be born into them and I sure as hell didn't like them. I couldn't wait until I got old enough to change them and change them I did. Yes, a lot of my upbringing still haunts me and depresses me but I have never let that hold me back.
4 different times I've decided I didn't like my circumstances and 4 different times I changed them to be something I liked better. I've started my life over with nothing a couple of times and the other two I started it over with a bit of money and then a larger chunk of money.
I've dated lots of girls from the ghetto and they all whine they can't get out or they can't be what they want. However none of them want to change their circumstances bad enough to do anything about them. They just want to feel oppressed and victimized and bitch about it.
They don't want to move, they don't want to change the people they hang out with, they don't want to work at McDonald's and they want to blame everyone and everything else for what they are and where they are. That's total bullshit. If you don't like your life, CHANGE IT!
Heh, they tell me I've got it made and don't believe me when I tell them what and where I came from. Sheesh, most of them had it and have it way better than I did yet because I've made some money they all think I was born with it and always had it.
They don't believe me when I tell them I've been homeless, they don't believe I was so broke I didn't eat for days at a time, they don't believe I picked up cigarette butts from the side of the road and smoked them. Why don't they believe me? The only thing I can think of is they believe you are stuck with what and where you were born and that it can't be changed.
They think working at McDonald's is beneath them. They think letting others take care of them or the govt take care of them is a good thing yet they bitch they don't like it. I have to much pride to let others take care of me, I have t much pride to ask others for a place to stay or food to eat. If I have to work at McDonald's to make a better life for myself I'm going to.
The job you do doesn't matter as long as you are taking care of yourself. If I had to work at a fast food place I'd save every cent I could. No drinking, no drugs, no buying things I can't afford, living as cheaply as possible until I can find something better.
The last time I decided I didn't like my circumstances I had my own business. We were about to sign a contract for nationwide distribution of our products when my ex wife went off the deep end. She had a fear of success and I had a fear of failure. I ended up giving her the company and leaving.
I had 1200 bucks, an old pickup and the clothes on my back. I worked at a crappy telemarketing job for a year and saved every cent I could. I lived in a dumpy three room apt and drove a 15 yr old chevy. I had nothing but a bed, cheap ass recliner, tv and microwave plus a few dishes.
I finally found a computer job I wanted but I'd already saved 3000 bucks from my working at the telemarketing job. 5 months later I had 5 thousand saved and went and paid cash for a PC at Wal-Mart. Then I taught myself how to build websites during my spare time. 6 months later I got laid off at my computer job but I didn't care as I was making more on the net than my job was paying me. That was 1996.
I've made quite a bit of money on the net, got married again and divorced again when she ran off with someone she met on the net 5 years later. She also left me with more than a couple of problems with the IRS, she stole 300 thousand and that left me with less than she had plus the IRS bill because she never made the tax deposits.
The net got saturated with people doing what I was doing so business went to hell. I either sold or gave away most of what I owned and moved to a different town. I still had enough cash to live on but not enough to do anything fancy or drive a BMW. Then it got worse and I started dating people I should have just left alone.
Once again I got tired of my circumstances and in February of this year I packed my Aztek with everything I wanted and drove off. I've spent the last months learning to do different things on the net and contemplating my life and what I believe. Things are getting better and I expect they will get to be the best they have ever been.
Why is that? Because I'm not afraid to pickup, move on and start over. At least this time I'm not starting as close to the bottom as I have before but that's because I learned to keep some start over emergency money stashed away.
I'm making new circumstances for myself because I didn't like the old ones. Anyone can do this but you have to be willing to work to do it. I won't say it's easy because it's not but I'm not going to accept handouts or sit and whine about my life. It's my life and I can make it what I want. So can you so go ahead and change yours to what you want it to be. It's a choice you have. Make your life better or stop whining about it.

A lot more of nothing interesting in Iowa
I don't really have to many memories of living in Sioux City the second time. Nothing major happened and for me it was just normal.
I did finally grow enough to get on top of the roof that was next to my grandmothers building tho. It was built pretty close and I figured out I could put my feet against my grandmothers bldg wall and my back on the other wall and then work my way up.
I found other places that worked too but this one provided me with a great hiding place and a place to observe what was happening without anyone knowing I was watching. At night it was really nice. Humans, much like animals, don't expect anything to happen from above and I was never noticed.
I still much prefer darkness to daylight. Even inside my house I keep it dark enough that I have to have a lamp on to see in the daytime. Brightness hurts my eyes and gives me a headache.
When we lived at the lake me ex wife, who must be afraid of the dark, demanded a night light outside. So we ended up with a regulation wooden telephone pole with a mercury vapor light on it that lit up about an acre.
Irritated the hell out of me and made me feel less safe than not having the light at all. Why? Because you can't see beyond the circle of light. Without the light I could see what was happening everywhere around the place. With the light all I could see was what was lighted.
She was afraid of her two ex husbands and with good reason. I wasn't afraid of either of them and in fact, they were afraid of me. Lol, helps to have a reputation as crazy now and then.
The other thing I remember about being in Sioux City is I had to babysit my sister one day so I just took her off wandering with me. We were out for hours just messing around like kids do. When we were on our way back home I found a pop bottle and it could be returned to the store for a nickle.
So I picked it up and was already tasting the chocolate donut I was going to get. As we got closer to home my sister told me to give it to her. I said no, wasn't going to happen. She told me if I didn't give it to her she was going to tell her mother I'd hit her and was being mean to her all day.
Whoops, there's an automatic bad beating coming if I don't give her the bottle. Little brat did crap like that all the time. You know I didn't give it to her and when she started hollering at me about it and what she was going to do I threw it down on the sidewalk and broke it.
That really pissed her off and she picked up the broken off neck of the bottle and threw it at my head. I got my arm up in front of my eyes in time and it sliced my elbow open. Bled like a stuck pig. Scared the hell out of her but really pissed me off. She had a really bad temper too and it really pissed her off not to get her way. Lol, still does. To bad, to sad.
My grandmother put two big band aids on it and it was fine. Left a nice scar tho and it's still there.
I don't know why but I seldom notice when I get cut on anything anymore. Been that way for about 25 years now. I helped Tina load the SUV at Sam's Club and when we finished she gasped and told me I was bleeding. About three inches above my right wrist on the outside of my arm and the blood was about to start dripping off my fingers. I never even felt it happen.
Probably happens about once a month and if I'm alone I don't notice it until I get blood on something or feel it running down my fingers or arm. OTOH I do have a very high pain threshold. I wonder if anyone has tested long term physically abused children, as adults, to see if their pain threshold is higher than non physically abused kids.
Funny but when I do have pain that requires drugs I need more drugs than the average person does to kill or minimize the pain. Maybe because I drank so much for so long. I don't know. I just know that I don't like pain of any kind. Mental or physical. I handle physical pain better than mental tho. Mental pain is the only reason this blog exists.

Did I deserve to be abused and beaten.
Obviously the answer to that question has to be NO! No kid deserves to be abused, no matter what they did. What they do deserve is to be loved, cared for and cherished to the best of our ability and this countries ability. We fail miserably on both counts.
Was I a bad kid? Not really but there were times I did deserve some punishment. Lol, if I was the same kid now I'd be in therapy and on high doses of drugs for ADHD, ODD, PTSD and a ton of other things. I'd be medicated until I was compliant and fit societies standards of behavior. However I wouldn't be me.
Did I do some bad things when I was a kid? Sure did. The kid that lived behind my house used to hang out with me. Another kid we didn't particularly care for played with us now and then. D and I both had BB guns and K had done something that had made both of us pretty angry at him so we quit playing with him completely.
K wanted back in our good graces so we told him if we could use his back as a target for our BB guns we would play with him again. It was fall so he put on his big coat and we put a magazine inside his coat and then proceed to shoot him in the back at the magazine. However neither D or I could resist and we each shot him once in the butt.
Naturally when he got home his mother asked what happened and he ratted us out. My dad beat the hell out of me, broke my BB gun and I was grounded for life. Same with D. Another thing is D and I weren't allowed to play together anymore and K wasn't allowed to play with either of us.
Yes, it was a dumb thing to do, it was cruel and we deserved to be punished but we didn't deserve the beatings we both got. We didn't hurt K except when we shot him in the butt and we both knew it was wrong while we were doing it.
D and I used play with matches. We particularly liked the wooden farmer matches. We'd walk along the railroad tracks and light them but we were smart enough to make sure we kept them between the rails and never started a fire.
One day K begged us to come along with us so we let him. He kept throwing the matches in the grass and we both yelled at him not to be doing that. Eventually we started a grass fire and D and I both rolled our bodies over it trying to put it out. Singed off most of my hair and eyebrows.
We finally figured out we weren't going to be able to put it out so we ran to D's house and used the phone. D picked up the phone and hollered fire, fire, fire and slammed the phone back down. I picked up the phone and told the operator there was a fire by the railroad tracks. Yes, they still had real live operators back then.
After notifying the fire dept the operator said "What have you and D done now?" as it turns out the operator we got was D's oldest sister. So we were busted. Go beat again and forbidden to play with D and K again. They were building a new fertilizer plant by the tracks about 3 blocks away from where the fire started an it came very close to being burned down. That was the end of playing with matches.
No, I wasn't a perfect kid. Lol, you couldn't even see perfection from where I was but I sure didn't deserve the beatings I got for the dumbass things I did wrong. I'm not sure how I'd handle a kid today like I was back then but I do know that beating the kid wouldn't help the situation.
I did lots of other kid things wrong but those are the two worst I can remember. At least at the age of 8.

Liars, thieves and more depressing thoughts
Before my mother beat me so badly she was always calling me names. She was always telling me I was a liar, a thief and a rotten child amongst all the other names, like bastard, SOB, little brat, etc.
After she beat me and I didn't cry I decided if I had the name I might as well play the game. Sheesh, if your going to be beaten for something you didn't do you might as well be doing it and get something out of it.
For the next ten years I was the lyingest, thievingest kid around, no matter where I lived. I seldom got caught. I'd steal from almost anyone and I just didn't care. My sister got everything so I decided stealing was the way to get mine.
I was the best shoplifter I've ever known. Of course all of this was before security cameras and all the surveillance stuff thee is now. Nothing was tagged and if you had the balls you could just walk out with it.
One year I stole every Christmas present I gave. I shoplifted every one of them. I got caught shoplifting just once and got out of it anyway. Two friends had bet me I couldn't steal 7 boxes of chocolate covered cherries. So I went to the grocery store next door with my big parka on and looked it over.
Then I started putting boxes of the chocolate covered cherries in my coat. Don't ya know I got caught sticking the 7th box inside my coat. The people from the store hauled me into the office and told me to give the cherries back so I took out two boxes and put them on the desk. They said they knew I took more so I took out another one and put it on the desk.
After doing that they nicely told me don't ever come back into our store and escorted me out. I went next door to the bowling alley where my friends were. and told them I'd gotten caught. Lol, they were surprised as hell that even tho I'd gotten caught I still managed to get away with four boxes.
All in all I managed to steal almost everything and the vast majority of it was from stores. Rifles, bicycles, bullets so I could go hunting, clothes, toys, fishing equipment, candy and books. I turned in a juvenile delinquent and loved the bad ass rep it gave me. Besides the fact I would fight at the drop of a hat.
It wasn't until I left home for good at the age of 17 that I stopped stealing things from stores. I now know that getting away from my mother and stepfather caused several changes in my behavior, all for the better. Perhaps because I was less depressed about my situation and was very happy not to be living at home.
At one point in my life, as a 14 year old I had over 2000 dollars buried here and there around the town I lived in. Kids didn't have much money back then so I had a paper rout to cover the fact I had money. I still had to take a 20 dollar bill to the store and buy bread and milk tho to get the bill broken down and not cause suspicion.
I had no fear of getting caught and even being in a jail for kids, don't remember what they called it back then but it was the juvenile version of an adult prison. The only thing I knew for sure is it wouldn't be as bad as living at home.
So how depressed and abused is a kid who'd rather be in jail than living at home. Child abuse does some really bad things to the minds of children. At some point I stopped all of that behavior and it was before I was 21.
As I said before, most of the people in prison had a past where they were abused. Because no one did much about child abuse we just kept building more prisons to put people in when they got old enough. Perhaps it might be better to stop the abuse and raise productive people rather than let them be abused and then act out and get put in prison when they are older.
We really need to fix two things in this country and it will solve about 50% of the crime problem. Stop child abuse and do something about poverty. Get kids jobs, get their parents some good jobs and some of it will stop. Be more vigilant about catching abusers and making sure that kids are raised in loving and caring homes or with loving and caring foster parents.
It does take a village to raise a kid and everyone should be involved instead of just ignoring it or labeling kids as bad.
